Kolte -- an academician par excellence
With the death of Dr Vishnu Bhikaji alias Bhausaheb Kolte, eminent litterateur, best known for his pioneering research in "Mahanubhav" literature, the region has lost one of its most illustrious sons in the literary and academic field.
Padmashree awardee and former vice-chancellor of the Nagpur University, Kolte was a multifaceted personality. An academician, Marathi writer, critic and researcher par excellence, he wrote as many as 21 books, many of them based on "Mahanubhav" literature and edited 15 books and about 20 copper plates and stone inscriptions in Marathi, Prakrit, Marathi and Kannada languages.
He was held in the highest respect for his pioneering work in the field of "Mahanubhav" literature. "Mahanubhav" Pandits did a lot of significant prose and poetry writing during the period between 13th and 16th century. These manuscripts were however originally written in a lesser known code language. Kolte decodified and critically edited them for the first time, with exhaustiveintroductions. His monumental work in the field won him the title of "Vidyaratna" in 1956, conferred by the All India Mahanubhava Parishad.
Among the books written by him include Mahanubhava Tatvadnyana (1945), Mahanubhava Achardharna (1948), Mahanubhava Sanshodhana (two volumes -- 1962, 1984), Pracheen Marathi Sahitya Samshodhana (1968) and Chakradhar Shevatache Prakaran (1982).
Among the 15 books he edited are Uddhav Geeta (1935), Rukmini Swyamvar (1940), Sthan Pothi (1937), Leela Charitra (1978), Shishupal Vadha (1960), Sri Govind Prabhu (1994) and Vachaharan (1953).
His monumental work was on how to simplify Marathi orthography. He abolished all the unpronounceable cumbersome nasal sounds in the language.
Kolte was born on June 22, 1908 in Narvel, district Buldana, a son of a Satyashodhak farmer. He had his school education in Malkapur and Khamgaon and his BA from the erstwhile Morris College, Nagpur (VasantraoNaik Institute of Arts and Social Sciences). He stood first in the MA Examination of Nagpur University in 1931, bagging three gold medals.
Retiring as the principal of the Morris College, he earlier was an assistant professor of Marathi with Vidarbha Mahavidyalaya, Amravati and also with Morris College. Till 1972, he was active in the academic world. He was a member and later chairman of the Board of Studies in Marathi, a member and later dean, faculty of Arts, a member of Academic Council and the Executive Council of the Nagpur University and also of the Board of Studies and the faculty of arts of four other universities.
Interestingly, his first book Lavhali (1933), was a collection of poems. He has also written a play, collection of critical articles on Sanskrit and Marathi books and authors and two literary biographies -- Sri Chakradhar (1952) and Bhaskarbhatta Borikar (1935).
The vast corpus of his writings includes over 250 research articles covering essays, published lectures, critical prefaces,translations and commentaries on classical texts as well as contemporary writings.

i am a mahanubhav panthia and a strong believer.
i want to show the other side of Dr. Kolte.
No doubt Dr Kolte was a multifaceted personality. He was awarded Padmashree cause he worked on Mahanubhav literature. As Mr. Satendre N Sinha quoted "Kolte decodified and critically edited them for the first time" is not totally true.
He did not decoded any of the literature but just edited what was already decoded by the saints of mahanubhav panth.
Mr. Kolte edited it in such a way that our most sacred literature had to go in High Court to seek justice.
He did not belived in our god, he did not respected our literature. He was only intrested in his personal gains because of which there are a lot of untrue things written and which have deeply hurted our feelings.
We cannot tolerate our god referred to as dead in our own literature. Our literature which gives life to people cannot bear the death of our god.
Therefore we had demanded his work in Mahanubhav Panth, should be disregarded. He might have done good work everywhere else but we cannot accept his work here which hurt our feelings.
Our demands had already been acknowledged. Dr. V.B.Kolte's edited Lilacharitra is already disregarded by the court.
But the sadest thing in our Panth is that some people who call themselves saints, are demanding for this work of insult (to our
god) for their own personal gain.
We can just mourn that our own people have deviated from our gods path, and pray that some day they will realise the truth.
But till then i urge to those people who r open to understand the other side of the story.
We know that these so called saints have a very convincing story, but you should also listen to the other side. Its only people like you who are not satisfied by what they are given but who keep digging and searching for the truth, can enlighten it.
Our Panth can stay strong with people who don't follow blindly but open their mind to follow truth.

Dandwat pranam to all dharmabandhu The wasnik mela (melawa) dated 19 and 20 aug 2008 was sucessfuly concluded by rejecting the lilacharitra edited by Dr. Kolte at panch krishna lawns at Adgaon, Nashik(maharashtra).About 2000 peoples were present in the melawa for both the days.On First day P.P.P.M Bhaskarbaba Bhojane,Shahada ,P.P.P.M.Govindrajbaba Bidkar,Latur( who has taken back his name from lilacharitra case at high court Nagpur.He was one of the person favouring kolte in the court,withdrawn his name and now asking for continuous ban on this kolte's book ) adressed the gathering on different questions asked by peoples present there.Next day P.P.P.M.Govindrajbaba Bidkar,Latur,maharashtra,Shri Nandkishor Dahane,and several peoples have expressed their views on the kolte issue.At the end the melawa was concluded by resolution passed about rejecting the demand of 3rd publication of the edition of lilacharitra edited by kolte from the government of Maharashtra .Recently the Highcourt Nagpur bench has directed the lilacharitra case to the lower court again. Akhil Bhartiya Mahanubhav parishad trying to impose kolte`s work on the community which involves several mistakes, misinterpretation,misconception about our Shri Chakradhar Bhagwanji and parmarg.He has also added forcefully the Prakshipt Ghatana(prakshipt lalas) in it's edition.Government of Maharashtra had also banned the book for the same in 1994.Akhil Bhartiya Mahanubhav mahamandal is trying against the demand of reprint of the book on several issues also been one of the supporter of this Wasnik melawa at Nashik.This is for your kind attention. umesh

To all Dharmabandhu With the blessings of Shri Chakradhar Bhagwanji We have convinced the website owner to delete the death event 7 feb 1273 about our swamiji on www.indianage.com after a long continuous struggle of 6 months.The dharmabandhu of Akhil Bhartiya Chattisgarh Jaykrishni Mahanubhav Mandal,Bhilai and the dharmabandhu from Mumbai maintained the communication with website owner.On their behalf I used to mail the owner continuously and now yasterday we got the success in this matter.Website owner mailed me in reply yasterday's mail that he has deleted the contents today itself. This is only due to the swamiji who have heard our callings and has inspired the website owner to act accordingly.I can not forget the efforts made by the mahanubhav yahoo group members who had initiated this move before two years but could not get sucess at that time .It is due to them only I have intervened in this matter and communicated to the owner positively.The credit goes to every one who had contributed with us or in past and prayed to our swamiji for deleting this death event.I have started this movement on 29 feb 2008 and within 6 months on 29 aug 2008 I have got the mail stating that the content deleted.I have experienced in this issue also swamiji's shruti"Tu ubha thaklasichi pure,siddhi te ethonichi neijail ki ga!'Thanking to every one who directly and indirectly involved in this issue. dandwat pranam to all
